Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain And Muscle Cramps

Hi Doc, I am a 51 year old male and I have several symptoms that may or may not be related. I have had chronic sinusitis for years, had nasal surgery but was told I may need more. The left side of my head feels full. When I lay down, I lay on my left side and can feel my sinus drain from one side of my head to the other. I then fal to sleep on my right side. I have had a cough for the last 6-8 months. I spit clear mucus. It s worse after eating. My employers has a health fair every year and this year I had multi-phasic blood work done and my White Blood Cell count was almost 12,000 (indicating yet another sinus infection?) I recently had another round of Zythromyacin and a steroid shot, which helped for almost a week. Now, I am experiencing significant back pain in my lower left hip amd having muscle cramps. I was diagnosed a few years ago with an abnormal heart rythm, and my healthfair EKG was read as abnormal. Whenever I get stressed, I have pain across my shoulders and between my shoulder blades. The only meds I m on is Bystolic, which I was put on for blood pressure. I was on Hydro??? which caused HUGE muscle cramps. The blood pressure thing came up when I went to the ER and my pressure was 212/106, but it has been running at around 138/80 ever since. I work in a coal power plant. There has been a history of prostate cancer among the other employees. I quit smoking over 5 years ago, but still chew nicorette 2-4 time a day (2mg). More disturbing of ALL of this, I notice many of the same symptoms in my family members, ages 1-48, both male and female. I chew gum like a fiend (regular gum), amd overweight (thanks to stopping smoking and all the steroids over the years). I developed an allergy to penicillin and sulfa drugs after having so many sinus infections. I need a new primary care physician because mine quit and left the profession. My gum chewing gives me heartburn, but I also have panic/anxiety attacks (so every chest pain is a heart attack). I have moved from a physically demanding job to a desk job, and after 20 years of shift work to straight dayshift. I would be interested in any insights and suggestions you might have. Thanks, Bob Cain

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As enough course of steroid has been tried and there is a history of high blood pressure, I would not advise to take off the counter medications to solve the pain on transient basis.

* An MRI of the concerned region is best recommended for detailed tissue diagnosis and further care accordingly. Would like to address your further queries as per your need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
