Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain With Mild Degenerative Disc Disease

I am experiencing severe back pain (lumbar) for 4 days. It is difficult to get up from a sitting position and I find I must stand still and try to straighten up for a minute or two before I can attempt to move my legs and walk. Walking is difficult for several minutes, and then the pain subsides somewhat. I am okay standing and walking around for about 10 minutes before I experience pain again and feel the need to sit down. No pain shooting down either leg. I do have mild degenerative disk disease. Lying down is generally comfortable, unless I turn over. Getting up from bed is painful. I tried Ibuprofen, and naproxen. Neither made any impact on pain. Have taken 2 hydrocodone pills in the past 24 hours. Not much impact. Ice doesn t seem to help. Should I consult my doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In acute phase of pain, take rest and hot pad fomentation. Over the counter pain medicine like Ibuprofen 400 -600 mg (depending on your age/body weight/severity of pain)twice a day after food. Or injection of pain medicine/steroid by doctor mostly works. After the pain goes, consult a spinal surgeon for specific advise (medicines/physiotherapy/local steroid injection/surgery).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
