Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea In A Child

Hi. My 5yo daughter has been having diarrhea several times a day for several weeks now. She has no tummy ache or fever, she is her normal bouncy hyper self, just has diarrhea instead of a solid stool. She is also very gassy. We have had a stomach virus several weeks ago. Could her diarrhea just be hanging on from the virus?? Idk what to start with. Thanks!~~Lana

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there Thank you for your question. Several weeks of diarrhoea is quite a long history. A viral infection would usually resolve after a week to 10 days. I would recommend that you take your child to a doctor or hospital to have her examined for signs of dehydration as this is a concern in prolonged diarrhoea and vomitting. They may also take a stool sample to test for the organism causing the diarrhoea. I recommend giving your child zinc daily for 10 days as this helps the gut lining to recover and shortens the duration of diarrhoea. I give my patients 20mg. Please do see a doctor as well. Hope this helps you and all the best!
