Suggest Treatment For Severe Knee Pain Post A Ligament Injury

I tore two ligaments in my right ankle at least 10 years ago. No surgery was performed by the Podiatrist, he said that if I had been an athlete then there would have been. I was prescribed a fitted sleeve that laced up with cross straps and physical therapy. For the last two years my ankle has gotten progressively worse, it cracks at least once every morning and then again several times during the day. I ve been experiencing on and off severe pain, I often use an elastic wrap to stabilize it while working. But the pain I ve been experiencing the last two days is almost as intense as it was after the initial injury. I m having a burning sensation, ice nor heat or a wrap are helping ease the pain. Any suggestions for relief or treatment would be greatly appreciated

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have a history of a ligament injury in the past, you are suggested to get it clinically examined for any complications. It can be a sprain, a tear, bone spur, osteoarthritis or a broken bone. medical evaluation is a must.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. You can use an ankle binder or electric heating ankle belt for support.

Since you have pain, rest your ankle as much as possible, application of ice, compression & elevation will help.

For severe bruising & swelling you can take pain-relieving medicines like Acetaminophen or NSAIDS, naproxen, one sos when needed. Get assessed, get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
