I feel like I am chasing a rabbit with my 92-year old mother s drugs. She has just come to live with us, and has only been here 48 hours. The drugs she has been prescribed are crazy. Four meds (Propranolol, Amlodipine, Losartan and Aspirin) for hypertension , but her blood pressure has been as low as 80/40. Tonight it s 113/73. Atorvastatin for cholesterol. But the real problems are Tramadol, Citalapram, and Alprazalam, that she says help her sleep, and relieve her back and shoulder pain. But when you read about those drugs, it seems that each pill can cause the effects that the other pills are trying to remedy - anxiety, panic, pain, sleeplessness, depression. At first, she was so doped up, she couldn t even move her feet. Now after two days of tightly controlled, but not cold-turkey control, she can walk, but complains she would rather be a zombie than have the pain and not be able to sleep. I have an appointment for Monday to evaluate all this, but what do I do for the next 36 hours?
