I am 18 years old and had my jaw wired shut on three days ago because of a broken jaw. The pain in my jaw is tolerable, but i have a terrible sore throat. I can hardly swallow. Is this from the breathing tube, and how long will this pain last!!!! could it be something more serious?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sore throat after intubation and maxillo-mandibular fixation can be probably due to infection in throat causing Pharyngitis and Dysphagia or painful swallowing. It can be due to bacterial throat infection or strep throat most probably. As the mouth cannot be opened it is a bit difficult to investigate, however a course of antibiotics and painkillers will help in resolving the infection and pain.So my suggestion is to consult your Dental Surgeon or an Emergency room and get evaluated. You can be advised antibiotics in syrup form along with dis solvable painkillers so that you can drink it as your mouth is wired shut. Drink warm water and other warm fluids. Avoid anything spicy and sour as it can further irritate the throat.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
