Suggest Treatment For Severe Spinal Stenosis

Hi, I have lumbar spinal stenosis and I ve had 2 MRI scans that have revealed L3-L4 and L4-L5 problems shall we say. I have a copy of one of the reports. I also have osteoporosis. The result of this is that the pain is such that I am a wheelchair user and have a blue badge. Among other medicines taken for heart disease (I had an MI 6 years ago followed 5 months later by a stent in my LAD) and hiatus hernia, I m also taking Shortec (5mg) twice daily and MST Continus (120 mg twice daily) for my back pain. Unfortunately I also have myelodysplasia (refractory anaemia) and for that I inject 150 microgrammes of Aranesp once weekly. My problem (yes I have more lol) is that several times a night I m woken by numbness in either hand combined with a horrendous feeling of burning. Last night I had 5 separate occasions. It s very very severe and of course it s causing me to lose sleep a lot. In addition, I also have continual finger jerking which is a real nuisance when trying to type. I was reading a review from someone who is using patches for pain and she s also having the same hand issues. It s so severe. Do you think it is being caused by the MST Continus and do you know of a substitute if you think it is the MST? Should I see my GP? Oh, I have bilateral ulnar nerve problems and also on my right elbow my main bones are rubbing together at the elbow. Over the years I ve had 2 separate operations on my right elbow in which I had the radial head excised. Next month I m due to go into hospital to have an operation on my right elbow to, in layman s terms, pull the bones apart and also to try to reroute the ulnar nerve rather than have an elbow joint replacement. Can you advise me please? Despite all this I m really a happy chappie lol.

Hi,

Definitely consult a neurosurgeon, the narrowing of your spinal canal is pressing on your nerves and it is responsible for your pain. If you don't then the problem will get severe and before you know, you might develop permanent neurological disability. Instead of wasting time on changing medications, go to a neurosurgeon and get your stenosis treated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
