Suggest Treatment For Shingles Spots On The Perineal Area

My mother was just diagnosed with shingles and she has a rash all along her perineal area including the left area above her buttocks and into her vaginal area. She has been prescribed an anti-viral and prednisone, but is there anything that she can do or take to relieve the pain she is in? She is in agony for obvious reasons considering the location of the blisters.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Shingles could be very painful in adults and so I understand the pain you might be going through for your mother. To get relief from the pain, your mother needs neurological pain killers such as Carbamazepine or Amytriptyline. However, these can only be prescribed by a doctor. In addition, she has to go through some test to see her immune level so that if she needs additional treatment, she should benefit.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Achuo Ascensius
