As per your complain there is a possibility that there acid reflux and due to irritation caused by acid there is excessive salivation and mucous formation at the back of throat and it can lead to chocking, acid irritation in throat can lead to coughing. If acid reflux is confirmed he/she can advise you to take proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole, antacids, taking small frequent meals, avoiding spicy, acidic foods, drinking plenty of water, taking more of probiotics like Yoghurt, loosing weight if you are obese and sleep with head and chest slightly raised as compared to feet as it will reduce the reflux of acid and ease in sleeping.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
