He has no medical insurance because he lost his job and has not seen a doctor for this problem. It is so itchy he tears the skin up. Thank you for your help.

Hello,

Your 31 yr old son has itchy patch under his armpit and neck. The patch is itchy and dries up. Your son should not use deodorants as he is likely allergic to one or more fragrances or other ingredients in the deodorants. Propylene glycol is a preservative and moisturizer that can also cause a rash. It can also be caused by allergic reactions, infections, and chronic conditions.

Your son is suggested to take care of his hygiene. He should take bath regularly and avoid wearing clothes on which he has sweated. He should wear soft cotton clothes. He should not share his clothes, towel or toiletries with anyone. It can be fungal infection, jock itch / ring worm. He can apply ointment clotrimazole on the affected area. He can also take a course of oral fluconazole for relieve.

Contact dermatitis can be treated by applying hydrocortisone cream / ointment. Cold compress is helpful. Do not scratch or pick. Your son is suggested to get clinically examined by a dermatologist to detect if it is intertrigo. Intertrigo will be treated with topical steroid cream to control itching. If it is resistant antifungal and antibiotics are prescribed. Wash daily with an antibacterial soap, wear loose under clothing, dry off well after bathing or showering. Reduce skin-to-skin contact.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
