Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
Focallin XR consists of Methylphenidate and the drug belongs to stimulants drug. The drug is known to cause activation and this may result in insomnia and anxiety. This is the probable reason he is not able to sleep properly. To avoid this most of doctors advise patients of ADD to take these medicines in day time only and not in evening. If he is having problems of sleep due to these medicines you can ask his doctor for IR (immediate release) or plain formulations of drug instead of long acting. This would prevent insomnia in evening.
If he is not getting good relief with the drug then other drugs like Clonidine, Guanfacine or Atomoxetine etc can be tried. These drugs don't cause much insomnia and instead will help in sleep apart from controlling the symptoms of ADD. Visit his doctor for prescription.
Thanks, hope this helps you. Take care
