Suggest Treatment For Slow Heart Beat With Mitral Valve Prolapse

I have a slow hart beat (43 a minute), I also have mitro valve prolapse. I got a cardiac stress imaging test not long ago and could work long enough to increase my heart rate to 129. I worry that I could get a stroke as my grand-mother died from one. Do I need a pace maker or can I take medicine to increase my heart rate or do I need to exercise? I could not talk to my doctor about my test, I m still waiting for her to call me. Do you have any feedback that could reassure me at this time? What questions should I ask my Doctor who does not seem to worry as much as I do?

Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Your heart rate is low, as you provided the information. If it is this low all the time, then further investigation is warranted. Do you have any symptoms, such as dizziness, fatigue? Are you on any blood pressure-lowering drug, which also has effect on slowing the heart rate (e.g. beta-blocker, digoxin, verapamil, diltiazem)? I would recommend a 24-hour Holter rhythm monitor, so we could determine this phenomenon.

As far as the mitral valve prolapse is concerned, I would recommend an echocardiogram, which would help us see if this prolapse produces mitral regurgation also (blood returning from the left ventricle to the left atrium through mitral valve, when it is supposed to be shut - during systole). And if there is mitral regurgation, what is the severity - is it mild, moderate or severe. After properly assessed, we can discuss about recommending or whithholding futher treatment.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. Take care.
