Suggest Treatment For Sore Hernia Above Navel And Diarrhea
Hi, I have been diagnosed with a small hernia above my belly button. I am currently waiting for an appt with a surgeon to see if it requires treatment. It was sore for the first few days but is no longer painful and barely protrudes from the skin, however I have started having diarrhea. Could this be from the hernia and should I be concerned?
HI, A hernia which is sore needs immediate medical attention. It suggests that the intestine that protrudes through the defect in the stomach wall is caught across the defect and is strangulated such that no blood is going to that intestine. This causes pain. The same mechanism can cause constipation if the whole of the lumen (passage within the intestine) is caught or can cause diarrhoea if only one side of the intestinal wall is caught and getting strangulated without affecting the pathway of stools. So, with an history of sore hernia and now with altered bowel habits, you are pretty much justified in going to the ER rather than waiting for the surgeons appointment.
