Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Swollen Lymph Nodes, High Fever And Body Pain
I was told I had strep throat on Monday. I woke up with a horrible sore throat, very swollen lymph nodes in my neck, a high fever and severe pain all over. I also have Lupus SLE. The doctor at urgent care prescribed Penicillin. My question is: I have coughed up mucous with blood in it 4 times between yesterday and today. I am worried there is something more serious wrong or could this be caused by my sore throat? Lupus has never affected my lungs before or anything. Thank you for answering my question!
Do you have associated cough too? It is common to have some blood stained mucus / secretions coming up in acute pharyngitis and other upper respiratory infections. This is caused by inflamed and erythematous mucosa there.
If you do not have any breathing difficulty, we need not worry now. Just continue the antibiotics. This will disappear in a couple of days. Avoid forceful coughing out. Do warm saline gargles. We need detailed evaluation only if hemoptysis continues after resolving the infection. Get back to your doctor in case the symptoms are not coming down in 3-4 days or breathing difficulty develops.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
