Suggest Treatment For Spiral Fracture Of 5th Metatarsal And Leg Swelling
I have a spiral fracture of my 5th metatarsil and it has been put in a cast. I have been told not to bear weight. It is hot inside my apartment and I find my leg swells up when I sleep despite having it elevated. Is this normal? I have also fallen over and placed my foot down 3 times. The cast under my toes is not broken but is no longer rigid. Do I need to go back to the hospital to have the cast checked?
Hello, Thanks for the concern. You have 5th metatarsal spiral fracture and applied cast for it. Generally cast is applied for 21 days and during that period you might have swelling of leg but it is due to improper cast. When cast is applied it should be below knee cast and have to take some precautions like you don't have to bear weight for 21 days, you take complete bed rest, your leg should be elevated from your body level, constant movement of your leg fingers like flexion and extension this will help in decreasing your leg swelling and have to take painkillers having serritopeptidase. According to history your cast is not rigid and swelling appears so for that you have to consult your treating orthopaedic surgeon and change the cast and follow the necessary precautions. After 21 days when your cast is removed you should consult physiotherapist for evercise. So immediately go to hospital. Take care
