Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Knee

I recently had a sudden swelling on my knee which came up in about half an hour and swelled up to about the size of a large apple and then reduced to the size of a lemon. After a week my doctor told me I had bursitis due to trauma to my knee. There has been no pain but since the swelling has gone down the lower part of my kneecap protrudes. There is no pain but I cannot kneel or put any pressure on it. Is this normal and will it disappear in time or will it now be permanent.
