Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When I drink alcohol, I especially notice after red wine, that there are times when my left calf feels tight and swollen. Sometimes it s just after a couple of drinks and not even a full glass. What could be the cause and how could I relieve the symptons. Once I go to sleep and wake up in the morning, it s usually down.
Alcohol causes rise in blood due to certain hormonal and salt changes in the body. However, at the same time it causes dilatation of the blood vessels in the limbs leading to increased fluid retention and swelling. It has been observed that decreasing the quantity of alcohol can be of great help. Eating helathy nutrtious diet along with moderate level of exercise each day can help to normalise the body functions. Alcohol is metabolizes through liver which in turn helps to maintain a balance between various blood components in the body. Increased levels of alcohol intake can affect the liver functions which can further lead to increase in pressure in the lower limbs as blood circulation from lower limbs to heart can be greatly affected leading to swelling and pain in legs especially at the joints.
Minimising the quantity of alcohol and maintaininh a healthy normal life style can help reduce the stress caused due to alcohol in the body.
