Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 8 year old son under and bottom lips are swollen. He was also itching and broke out into hives. I gave him 2 teaspoon of benadryl 4 hours ago and applied ice on the lips. This Has Been Happening Since Four Days ago. I kept repeatin the steps, but this time the swelling is not going down. Should I take him to the ER?
I can understand your concern. It seems like an allergic reaction only that the lips are swollen and hives are present on the body and it seems that your son needs better antihistamine than Benadryl.
I would recommend you to give him Loratidine 5 mg (Lorfast) once a day for 5 days. The reaction and swelling should subside with this medicine.
If you do not observe any improvement in the condition after the first dose, then a pediatrician or dermatologist should be consulted and blood tests might be needed. Ice application will not help in this kind of swelling so you can stop that if you want.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your son feels better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
