Suggest Treatment For Tooth Discoloration And Dark Green Stool

Worried about teeth discoloration + dark green stools (almost black) in 60+(Female) family family member. Here is a photo of dietary supplements + her teeth at http://imgur.com/a/CxFwO AGE: 66 SEX: Female HEIGHT: 5 5 I think WEIGHT: 185 lbs I think RACE: Latin / from central America (appears white due to her grandfather being a blond haired blue eyed Spaniard) DURATION OF COMPLAINT: Dark green/nearly black stools have been going on for approx 3 days. Teeth discoloration has been going on for hours. She also has pain in her sides that s been going on for weeks, since maybe the beginning of November. LOCATION: Not Applicable for stools, teeth discoloration are on teeth. Though there is some pain on her sides as shown in http://imgur.com/a/CxFwO EXISTING RELEVANT MEDICAL ISSUES: Diverticulitis CURRENT MEDICATIONS: I don t know her prescribed medications, but I do know that she doesn t take any recreational drugs like nicotine, marijuana (not a smoker at all), caffeine, etc. On rare occasion she may drink some tea, like Chamomile or Red Zinger, from the Celestial Seasonings / Sleepy Time brands of tea. RELEVANT PHOTOS: At http://imgur.com/a/CxFwO are dietary supplements and pictures of her teeth. Hi. Female family member has had oddly colored stools when she goes to the bathroom (seems like a very dark green to me, but black to her) for the past few days (maybe 3 days). Further, she saw her teeth today and they seemed very oddly colored, like either they were black or see through. Times are tough, we don t have enough money for go to the dentists that often. She takes these supplements, as shown in the above linked pictures, for Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Pro-Biotics (good stomach/intestinal bacteria). She s been taking those for weeks without any problem. She did take some vegetable juice by juicing lettuce, kale, celery and other leafy greens, but that was only started yesterday. Also, for weeks now since about the beginning of November, she s been feeling some sharp pains in her sides that come and go. I read that stress can cause these sort of problems and well...we have that in spades. It s almost like EVERYTHING is stressful and painful, because times are so financially tight. Don t know what to do, but the thing she saw with her teeth freaked her out and made her really worried. Please help. Not sure what else to say. Thank you.

Hello,

I can understand your concern and have followed the link you have given and have studied the dietary supplements the patient is taking along with the discoloration you are talking about.

As far as the discoloration is concerned, there is really nothing abnormal regarding teeth. Our teeth have three layers: outermost is enamel, beneath enamel is dentin and the core is pulp tissue of the tooth. As the person ages, the teeth undergo inevitable wear process called attrition due to eating, tooth-to-tooth contact during day-to-day activities and other habits. As the patient is 60 years of age, this much attrition is expected and due to this attrition, the tooth color seems changed as the outermost layer of enamel is being worn off showing darker color of the underneath dentin. She probably had teeth color change for quite some time and may not have noticed yet. If she is experiencing sensitivity while consuming hot or cold foods, she can use Colgate Sensitive Pro-relief or Sensodent-KF toothpaste.

In addition, the green/black color of stool could be due to consumption of leafy vegetables, presence of infection in the gastrointestinal tract or hemorrhoids/bleeding in the intestinal tract. I would advise you to consult a physician in this regard for confirmed diagnosis and further treatment.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
