Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My aunt is 89 years old and quite active, lucid and capable. She has no health issues other than a thyroid imbalance which is treated with medication. She has had numerous tests over the last 3 years for transient weakness in her legs. She tried the socks that apply pressure. They seemed to be effective for two days. I realized that her father and two brothers both complained of weakness, using phrases like, "I feel like my legs are going to give out from under me." Sometimes that actually happened. Would circulatory issues be transient. Would nerve issues associated with spinal degeneration be an option. She has no children. I am her primary support.
I am sorry to hear about your Aunt. She is lucky to have you as a support for her. Her symptoms sound similar to peripheral vascular disease which is reduce circulation to her legs. This may also be accompanied by leg pain and cramping. If I were her doctor I would have her get vascular studies to the arteries in her legs.
The other option you mention is nerve disorder or neuropathy. This would usually cause burning sensation in her feet and legs. This may be another condition that is affecting her legs.
To help her she should eat a low fat diet and do moderate exercise but stop when her legs get tired. Even a little exercise will help circulation. She should also be taking aspirin daily if there are no reasons not to.
