Suggest Treatment For Trauma, Rage And Memory Loss

I am a surrogate parent for a 19 year old autistic male who was abandoned by his parents after years of sexual and emotional abuse by them. He has had two incidents in his life when he does not remember what happened (what he did) during episodes of rage. One event was beating his abusive father years ago and the other was this week when he assaulted another teen over a minor rejection then went to his room and put a belt around his neck and applied pressure until he was found unconscious. He does not recall either hitting the boy or using the belt. Is there a name for the condition of not remembering acts committed when in a state of rage?

Hi,

I can understand your concern. Sometimes when a person goes through immense physical or mental trauma, the brain shuts off the memory of the incidences. It is the protective mechanism of the brain to save the person from memory of the painful incidences.

However, from the incidences you have described, I would like to advise you to take the patient to the psychiatrist or mental health professional without any delay. From his behavior, it is clearly seen that he might cause self harm or can hurt somebody else in rage. He needs prompt treatment for his autism and his raging episodes.

The mental health professional will give counselling sessions and medicines that will help his autism and rage. In addition, they might give him behavioral modification therapy that can divert his rage to other non-destructive behavior.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish your son feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
