Suggest Treatment For Viral Gastroenteritis Causing Frequent Diarrhea

I went to the Dr. yesterday because I caught a bug that has given me diarrhea for the last 5 days straight. He told me to try BRAT, probiotics, water and pedialyte until next week and if I don t get better to go back for tests. This morning I woke up and had 2 almost regular stools. Then again this evening I grew sick again. I again had diarrhea as few times and now I feel as though I need to go and nothing is really coming out; mostly air. Some of the times, with the air, stuff is coming out. Almost a mucasy substance. Now, I see traces of blood in it. Nothing major, a few streaks. Should I worry and go to the er? Wait until tomorrow and go to urgent care or just wait and see if it passes?

Hello,

Oh, no antibiotics. This is mostly good. Mucous and/or blood is not common with a virus and is an indication of either a bacterial bowel infection or something else altogether like inflammatory bowel.

With pain or fever, it's sort of an emergency. With milder symptoms, it is less urgent. cannot say in your particular case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
