General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 85 years old Uncle who underwent heart bypass surgery 15 years ago but now the heart is working only 20 percent of its efficiency hence there is retention of water in lungs and legs.
Since the cause is known of the problems your Uncle is facing I would advise him the following:
It is not just the heart failure that cause this problem, it can be complicated further by Anemia or hypoproteinemia.
Get the CBC for hemoglobin, thyroid functions, serum proteins and other liver function tests.
Correction of any deficiency can help him the best.
The basic cause of heart low function can be investigated well by the Cardiologist and corrected with appropriate medications as much as possible.
reduce the common salt load in blood.
Elevation of lower limbs sometimes helps reduce the edema of the legs and feet.
Cardiac supportive and strengthening medications will help further.
Keep him ambulatory.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
