Suggest Treatment For Weight Gain While On Valsartan

I have been taking valsartan (Diovan) 320 Mg for quite awhile. I have gained about 35 pounds and I feel like my tongue is swollen. It along with other meds have not kept my blood pressure from spiking. Could this med be the cause of my weight gain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker used in the treatment of high BP, heart failure and other conditions.

Its most common side effects include hypotension, dizziness, swelling of the lips and sometimes dry cough. It is unlikely to be responsible for the weight gain.

Valsartan alone does not seem be effective to control your high BP.

You may need to take an additional drug such as hydrochlorthiazide for the effective control of BP.
Weight gain could be due to some underlying problems such as hypothyroidism or heart failure.
Hope the advice given above would be useful.
