My family adopted a dog from our local shelter about 2 months ago. As we were finishing the paper work the shelter worker told us the dog had recently been treated for tapeworm, one dose was 99% effective most of the time, and the tapeworm wasn t contagious to us. I researched this and realized that these facts were pretty accurate. The only way for a human to catch dog tape worm is to digest a flea carrying the egg, which is very rare. About a month later my husband found a small thin worm moving on the toilet paper when he wiped. He went to the doctor and they treated him for tapeworm without having the stool results first. He felt better for a while. Later they told him the stool results were negative for tapeworm and that it was probably pin worm which does not show up on the parasite test. During this time I found what looked like pin worm in my stool. Yet I was having additional symptoms that mirrored tapeworm symptoms (extreme fatigue, blood and mucus, and what also looked like tapeworm segments in my stool). My test results were negative from the lab as well. My family has been treated twice with the medication for pin worms, Pin X and Reese s. We have tried hard to clean as instructed. Yesterday I found a worm in my 2 year old s diaper. My 8 and 10 year old daughters are not having any problems. I m wondering are we just not clearing the pin worm out of the house or could the test results not be accurate for tapeworm? How do we know for absolutely certainty what we have?
