Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 47yr old female. I have recently had a weight gain of 12 lbs in one week while I was on vacation at the ocean. I noticed a little swelling around one of my ankles, not bad. I have had very frequent trips to the bathroom and have lost 4 lbs of the weight in 3 days already. The disturbing part is I have wet the bed twice in a matter of 3 hours. Only awoken because I had to go again..and discovered the wetness...lots of it. Is this normal water weight and the typical way to rid the body of it. And what might have caused it...car travel...diet change on vacation?/
Weight gain of 12 pounds in 1 week is likely fluid build up. This can occur with a high salt diet or in persons with a history of heart, kidney or liver disease (because the body has a hard time getting rid of fluid if these organs are not working well).
Incontinence (acute-recent onset), may occur if there is an infection in any aspect of the urinary tract. With both of these symptoms, it may be best to be assessed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
