Hi,
The most probable cause for
vertebral fracture without significant trauma is
osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the medical term used for calcium degeneration of the bones. This maybe due to the age of the individual, gender where women are more commonly affected,
mineral deficiency, infections, malignancy, etc. X- ray,
CT scan, MRI scan and DEXA are the tests available to analyze and confirm the diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Depending on the severity of osteoporosis, medical or surgical management with supportive brace will be advised. Analgesics such as
paracetamol, NSAIDs are prescribed for mild pain. Opioids may be prescribed for
severe pain for short period of time. Bone strengthening agents such as
bisphosphonates are prescribed to increase the bone strength.
Bracing is added to prevent excessive stress to the bones and to reduce the pain. Surgical management is advised, if medical management not helps much.
Vertebroplasty and
kyphoplasty are the surgical procedures available in which
bone cement is injected via needle into the vertebra to increase the strength of the bone. Need rest for two to three months for cure.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
