Swelling, Burning Sensation With Pricking Pain After Being Stung By Wasp, Sting Head With Tiny Puss Pocket. No Help From Benadryl Cream. Suggest

I think I was stung by a wasp, at least I think that is what it was...It was a burning sensation and intensified. It swelled and burned more so. It has been two and a half hours now and is still burning with little pin prick sharp pains above it and below it. The sting/bite was under my arm between shoulder and elbow. Pharmacist told me Benadryl cream. I did and it is very sore and still burning but not as much. I thought Benadryl was for itching not burning. The sting head seems to have a tiny puss pocket on it. Should I open it up and is there another medication that would have taken the burning away.

Hi thank you for your query.
Take out the stinging needle if its still there on your skin. Take levocetrizine 10 mg tablet every 12 hours for 2 days. Take paracetamol 500 mg tablet twice daily for 2 days. Clean the place with providone iodine lotion to prevent further infection. Local application of EMLA will anesthetize the area and relieve pain temporarily.
I hope this will help. Inform here how you stay after medication.

General Surgeon Dr. M Y Shareef's  Response
Hi ! Local benadryl cream may not work in such situation. I would suggest you with some oral anti histaminc (anti alltergic ) like cetrizine, and an oral anti inflammatory drug for the acute painful/burning phase. If there is increasing cellulitis and pus formation, it signifies that there is a superadded infection, and in that case I would also add an antibiotic specially active against staphyllococcus which is a kind of bacteria found commonly in skin infections. However, as all these are prescription drugs, I would like you to be reviewed personally by your family physician who can decide on these drugs and dosages for you.
Thanks for using healthcaremagic for your health query. Good luck.
