Swelling In The Upper Lip And Sore In The Inside Of The Lips After A Fall. Pus Formation. What To Do?

I fell on a sidewalk three days ago and landed on my face. The swelling on my upper lip has gone down but there is a huge sore on my inside upper lip and it seems to be torn by the impact of my upper teeth during the fall. I have been washing it with salty water several times a day but it is still present and when I put a tissue on it and apply light pressure, a yellow "pus-like" smelly effusion comes out. Not much. But should I go to a dentist or doctor if if continues much beyong this weekend? One other thing, I am diabetic so the mouth canker-like sore is of especial concern to me.

Hi !
Thank you for your query.

Dear sir,

You seem to have an infection that has been superadded over the wound you got by falling over the upper lip.
Since you are a diabetic the tendency of getting infections is increased and there is delayed wound healing. You should check with an endocrinologist for this immediately so that he can monitor your sugar levels which is essential for effective recovery and plus start with an appropriate antibiotic coverage to heal the wound.

If you have any further queries feel free to ask.
Wish you good health.
Take care.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Any wound in diabetic patient take more time than any other non-diabetic.
The wound is at very soft part so this is one more reason of delaying healing.
You haven't mentioned that whether diabetes is under control or not.
Presuming that diabetes is under control so wash with salt water will not heal the would , rather wash wound with povidone solution and apply SILVER SULPHADIAZINE CREAM over injured part.
The yellow pus like liquid is an oozing from the wound.
Anti-septic washing and broad spectrum antibiotics will heal the wound.
Once again please control the diabetes.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

I understand that you had a fall which lead to injury on your upper lip. The delayed wound healing is due to diabetes. Have you checked your blood sugar level? You may need to start with antibiotics too to avoid infection. I would advise you to see a physician for this.

Take Care

Hello there ,

Thanks for writing your query,

I have gone through your clinical history and it suggets to me , you have developed an abscess out of infection in the lip mucosa due to trauma .

Your upper anterior teeth may have traumatized the lip mucosa and infection over the site has lead to formation of abscess.

This pocket of the abscess needs to drained and compressed in position followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesics will cure your problem.

please visit a dentist and get the clinical examination done.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

Delayed wound healing is due to presence of Diabetes.
I would suggest you to visit the Physician and get your blood sugar level estimated.

I would suggest you to take warm saline rinses.
Take antiseptic mouthwash gargles to prevent infection and promote healing.
Apply metrogyl oral ointment topically over the affected area in the mouth.

Hello AChantal,

Since you are diabetic, the ulcers developed on your lips will heal gradually.
I would advice you to apply dologel on the affected site.
Rinse the area using povidine iodine solution and the pus has to be drained and cleaned well.
Take antibiotics after consulting with your dentist.
In severe cases, steroids has to be administered.
Maintain oral hygiene well.
Use chorhexidine mouthrinse to gargle.
Avoid lip biting habits.
Take vitamin rich diet and drink plenty of water.
Hope this helps.
