Swollen, Red Gums And Sore Throat. Are The Gums Affected By Sore Throat?

Hi,
My name is Katie. My gums are really swollen and red and I also have an extremely bad sore throat. My gums have never been this swollen before. I thought at first it could be gingivitis, but I've never had any trouble with my teeth at all (no cavities or anything). Could the sore throat possibly be affecting the gums because of a bacterial infection?

Hello Katie

Although your teeth dont have cavities , gingivitis is due to plaque around teeth and not due to cavities. You have not mentioned your age as there is age related ginigvitis also due to hormonal changes.Just consult your dentist and go for complete cleaning of teeth and surrounding gums.in the mean while start using some mouthwash and rinse with warm saline water.

hi katie
thanks for asking your query

swollen gums is due to multiple reasons like poor oral hygiene, crowded teeth leading to palque accumulation, vitamin C deficiency, any medication, irritation, inflamation, any infection, gastric disease...

you can improve your swollen gums by eating a healthy balanced diet.
maintain very good oral hygiene, brush twice a day and floss regularly
gargle with saline water
use antiseptic mouthwash
take vitamin and iron supplements
de-stress yourself, because high level of stress impact hormones which cause swollen gums
avoid tobacco and extreme foods/beverages
hope this will help
thanks

Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
I suggest the following treatment options currently:
1) For pain relief, anti-inflammatory, fever reducing medications (acetaminophen, ibuprofen) will help you.
2) For soreness relief you can have salt water gargles (gargle with XXXXXXX warm salt water- one forth teaspoon of salt would be enough in half a cup of water) several times a day, lozenges and warm liquids. Gargling with warm water mixed with dissolvable aspirin can give additional benefits.
3) Avoid Acidic Drinks, Spicy Food and Sour Substances.
4) Consume plenty of water and good fruits and vegetables.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Red ,swollen gums may be due to gingivitis.
Systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus,epilepsy
poor oral hygiene maintenance
vitamin-b12,c,iron,folic acid deficiencies, immunologic abnormalities-all these factors can cause gingivitis.
Sore throat usually will not affect the gingival health.
I would suggest you to get scaling done.
Take nutritional rich diet.
Brush your teeth twice daily.
Rinse your mouth after every meals to prevent plaque accumulation.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
This could be an infection of the gums which has affected your throat also. Gingivitis could be due to poor oral hygiene, vit C deficiency, diabetis, drugs like phenytoin sodium. Take warm saline gargle which will help reduce the inflammation of gums and throat. Consult your dentist and get a scaling and curettage of your gums done. Massage your gums with finger after brushing. Flossing of teeth should be done once daily and use a mouth wash twice daily for one month.

Regards
