Taking Risperdal With No Relief. No Energy And Stays In Bed. Solution?

I have a relative who is presently taking resperdal for the past year and to date she is not feeling any better. She has no energy and stays in bed most of the time and do not go out. What should she do? She calls me everyday when her husband leaves the house. Most of time her husband is gone and leaves her alone at home. So he calls me and we talk and pray and I talk to her until her husband arrive home. Please advise me how I can futher help her immediately.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
Your relative has complaints of low energy and loss of interest (you have not provided any other details like duration or associated symptoms). These symptoms alone are not sufficient to diagnose the illness because it is seen as a part of many disorders.
Apart from getting routine tests done to rule out any possible medical illness, depressive illness has to be ruled out in her. You also mention that her husband does not give her enough time and loneliness can lead to depressive illness.
You also say that she is on Risperidone from the past one year. This drug belongs to the class of antipsychotics and has various indications in psychiatry for use. You also say that there seems to be no response. In that case the diagnosis for which the drug was prescribed has to be reconsidered, or if any new symptoms have developed after prescribing the drug, it needs to be reported to the treating doctor. Right treatment when given usually helps control symptoms of a mental illness.
Consult an experienced psychiatrist for the current problem, it will help your relative.

Hope this helps,
Wishing her the best of health,

Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

I have gone through your available history.
Her withdrawnness and lack of energy might be because of
- negative symptom of schizophrenia
- Depressive episode
- As a side effect of risperidone
You should take her to psychiatrist for detailed evaluation . Doctor may rule out physical causes by doing blood investigations like hemogram, thyroid function test or vitamin and electrolyte assay.

Treatment will be directed as per cause.

She may aslo get benefit by doing stress management and relaxation exercise .

Thanks.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Resperdal is not effective ?
How can you say?
Main reason is not loss of energy or lack of energy.
Upload the reports and that will reveals the exact nature of illness.
Get in blood examination complete as C B C, E S R , SUGAR , lipid profile, albumin level.
In my opinion the root cause of disease is tension , so consult a psychiatrist and get his opinion.
Hope I have answered your question.
If further any question I will help.
Good luck.
Dr. HET
