Taking Alprax During Pregnancy. Will There Be Any Side Effects?

thinking about having a 2nd child...we currently have 2 year old. during my pregnancy with her i was taking a light dose of sertraline 25mg daily...in the last couple of months i havent been taking sertraline but daily alprax 0.5mg - benefits me better than sertraline ever did even though i had been taking it for years. my concern now is the risk during pregnancy? im 36 years old.

Hi,
If you are planning to conceive you should avoid alprazolam which is a benzodiazepine drug.It is associated with terratogenicity ( intrauterine damage to embryo/fetus)It also causes spontaneous abortions.The drug when consumed at last trimester causes fetal drug dependance and withdrawal symptoms post natal period (after birth)It is also excreted through milk which causes drowsiness in child .Hence you should avoid it if planning pregnancy or if you are pregnant.
