Hello my name is James Im19 year old guy. about a month ago I started having shortness of breath feeling. when I breath in just felt like I couldn't get enough air. Then a few days later I had bad heartburn I took some quick relief pills and it worked but them it would come back. I then tried antacids (liquid) and it got rid of it. After a couple weeks after I still have shortness of breath my doctor just gave me a prescription for some heartburn pills. I.ben taking them for almost a month and I still have shortness of breath and sometimes a burning felling in the back of my throat. Ive already had my lungs xrayed all came back fine. just not sure what to do.. I hope its not like gerd ive always been pretty healthy.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
With the available described symptoms, there appears to high possibility of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Presence of heart burn and breathlessness suggests the diagnosis.
GERD may be associated with dyspepsia and dyspepsia is a collection of symptoms consisting of acidic belching, abdominal heaviness and bloating, gargling sound , excessive flatulence.
You should consult with internal medicine specialist/ gastroenterologist and should go for thorough check up.
You should also go for endoscopy along with biopsy and urea breathe test for H. Pylori.
If Urea breathe test is found to be positive then you have to take complete eradication therapy for H. Pylori bacteria.
Treatment depends on exact diagnosis.
Meanwhile, you should also take proton pump inhibitors along with prokinetics and gastro-protective medications.
Take care,
Dr. Mayank Bhargava
