Tested Positive For Type 2 Herpes. Will Condom Prevent Wife From Getting Herpes?
my new partner was tested for me and tested positive to herpes type 2. He said he only remembers one time 20 years ago that he had sore on his penis when prev. married. He has not had another outbreak since. This sore went away in 2 days. hE was put on a preventative drug just recently after being tested positive. How at risk am I and is a condom enough to prevent me from getting herpes?
Hello Thanks for your query.Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your partner has Herpes type 2 infection detected very recently.
Though not 100% safe It is advisable to have protected sex by using condoms.
You may take anti herpes medication for a week as a preventive measures.and ask your partner to get tested frequently as relapses and recurrence is very common in Herpes Infection.
Absence of symptoms for more than 20 years, Genital Herpes is unlikely to be infectious to the partner. But we have to remember that without visible lesions also sometimes viral shedding will be there and that is more common with women and recent recurrences. Consistent and correct use of condoms definitely offers a very high degree of protection. Wish you a safe sex. Dr S.Murugan
There are two primary ways that STDs are transmitted. Some diseases, such as HIV infection, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis, are transmitted when infected urethral or vaginal secretions contact mucosal surfaces (such as the male urethra, the vagina, or cervix). In contrast, genital ulcer diseases (such as genital herpes, syphilis, and chancroid) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are primarily transmitted through contact with infected skin or mucosal surfaces.
Consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of herpes transmission. To achieve the maximum protective effect, condoms must be used both consistently and correctly. Inconsistent use can lead to herpes acquisition because transmission can occur with a single act of intercourse with an infected partner.
Hope this helps.
