Thick Flap Of Skin Where The Wisdom Teeth Is Removed. Will It Cause Dry Socket ?

Just yesterday morning I got my four wisdom teeth removed. When I went to bed that night I woke up and felt around my mouth with my tongue . I noticed where one of my wisdom tooth was pulled that there was a thick flap of skin that I could could open up and such with my tongue. I did get stitched up, but I thought the stitches would have prevented this. Shall I call my doctor who did the procedure? Will I get dry socket from this? I taste a slight amount of blood , but that is usually normal since I just got them out yesterday. What shall I do?

Hi,

Thanks for the query.

It is normal to have a flap of tissue at the site of tooth extraction. Furthermore it is normal to taste blood following the tooth extraction. So do not worry, it will heal up in few days. Usually the edges of gum will be stitched by the dentist after extracting the wisdom tooth. Still, loose edge of the tissue remains. This maybe the part you are feeling with your tongue. You will not get any dry socket from feeling a flap there. But certainly there are few things you can care to prevent dry socket.

- Do not try to repeatedly touch the wound site by your tongue. This can dislodge the clot from the wound.
- If you smoke, try avoiding it.
- Do not rinse your mouth forcefully.
- If you feel there is extra bleeding from the site continuously, please visit your dentist immediately.

Hope I have answered your concerns. let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Regards

Hello and welcome to hcm,

The flap of gum after tooth extraction usually heals by its own with granulation tissue formation.
To prevent developing dry socket, maintain good oral hygiene.
Rinse your mouth after every meals.
Irrigate the socket using betadine/warm saline.
Take complete course of antibiotics.
Avoid frequent spitting.
dressing the socket using zoe/iodoform gauze can be done.
Take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

As you said you are feeling a flap by your tongue after wisdom tooth extraction it might be a loose tissue remnant, the edges of the flap are usually sutured by the Dentist at the time of extraction of wound. You dont need to worry about this, the wound will heal by its own.

Do not irritate the wound by your tongue as it may dislodge the clot from the socket.
Follow the post extractions instructions given by the Dentist properly.
Do not gargle or spit forcefully.
Take complete course of antibiotic and analgesic.
Take lukewarm saline gargles 3-4 times a day.
Use antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice daily this will prevent infection and promote healing.
Quit habit of smoking, if present.

Hope this helps out.

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

your history suggests that one of your wisdom tooth has got a flap which is hanging and causing irritation to you.

for this you need to visit your dentist and get it examined once for proper suturing.if the suture has got opened up it should be restitched .

also take your medications properly and follow post extraction instruction religiously to avoid any kind of complication like dry socket.

hope it helps.

take care.

thanks
