Thigh Injury, Swelling Above Knee, Tender Stiff Knee. How To Strengthen Knee?

A heavy object fell on my thigh causing great pain in my thigh and knee area and subsequent swelling . I iced my leg for a week or so and the pain and swelling has subsided, but some swelling remain just above my knee and my knee is still tender and stiff. My thigh seems to be doing fine. How do I get the swelling down and strengthen my knee?
