Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism. On Coumadin. Had Wine Last Night. Adjust Coumadin Dosage Today?
I am on coumadin as a result of a thrombosis in my leg and a resulting pulmonary embolism . As no cause could be found I am supposed to remain on coumadin indefinately. I don t as a rule drink much alcohol but last night went to a party and had quite a bit of wine ( 5 glasses ..almost a bottle). Should I adjust my coumadin dose downward today?
Get an PT/INR done as must be doing it previously. If it is deranged (out of therapeutic range of 2-3 ) then you must have to visit the physician for adjusting the dose accordingly.
Long term alcohol affects the coumadinmetabolism, liver function and causes increase in INR. High INR will lead to bleeding complications.
Certain foods and beverages affects coumadin metabolism and cause deranged INR and bleeding complications.Hence avoid eating or drinking large amounts of:
Kale
Spinach
Brussels sprouts
Parsley
Collard greens
Mustard greens
Chard
Green tea
Cranberry juice
Alcohol.
As you need long term coumadin therapy hence get INR levels atleast once in a month.
Hope this information will help you better.
Wish you good health.
