Titanium Plate Put On Mouth, Removed Ameloblastoma. Couple Of Teeth Left On Left Side, Right Side Swings
Hi, my husband had a titanium plate put in his mouth, following removal of an ameloblastoma. There were a couple of teeth left on his left side of his mouth right at the back. A few teeth left on the other side. Anyway, now he is showing me that when he puts his tongue on the left side that part at the back (remaining mandible), swings back and fore. I am concerned, because I thought it would be more secure than that, but he reckons this is normal. Should he get it checked out again? He says it has always moved a bit. How much swing is acceptable? Is it a bad sign? It seems way too much movement to me. Could it be that he is afraid of what might be found so resists the check up?
Hi, A titanium plate post segmental resection of mandible (this is usually required for ameloblastoma) is put for reconstruction and is meant to maintain the continuity of mandible by providing a rigid fixation of the remnant of mandible. The can be slight movement of the segments but excessive movement suggests a loosening of plate and this will lead to a poor occlusion as well as the chances of further loosening. So please get your patient examined from the surgeon who has operated and an OPG may be required. Regards
