Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. Pain arising in and around the tail bone area is termed as COCCYDYNIA. The treatment for this condition is by conservative methods and is as follows - - Use analgesic like advil or aleve as and when needed - Apply heat or ice packs over the painful area - Sitz baths (which involves soaking hips and buttocks in warm water) will resolve the swelling faster and provides good pain relief - Adopt a leaning forward position while sitting for prolonged periods - It will be better to use a doughnut shaped pillow while in seated position An xray of the sacrum is necessary to rule out any fracture of the coccyx.
