Hello! My 11 year old son went to the dentist and has an abscess tooth . We made an appt to return next week and get the tooth pulled. Luckily, its a baby tooth. I was just wondering how painful this is going to be for him. Also, I noticed tonight his cheek is a little swollen. Is there something I can do to relieve the pain and swelling. Should I call the dentist back?
hi , yes this can be painful , but you must give your son anti biotic as prophylactic and for swelling control. the extraction process is totally painless. and this temporary tooth will be good if extracted. this will save the damage to other adjacent teeth. regards.
hello,
i read your prooblem, as you said your son has an abscess tooth.......
definitely it has to get extracted to get relieve, because it will help in the drainage of the pus......
as you said you noticed his cheek swollen, it might because of cheek biting.....
but you need to go to the same dentist for the correct diagnosis.....
but nothing to get worried.....
please go to the same dentist for appropriate treatment.......
take care

hello nicole..
your worry about your child is quite obvious, but do not worry because before removing the tooth , dentist will give local anesthesia and after that no pain will be there during procedure. Swelling an pain both are due to chronic infection and the abscess caused. abscess causes pus below and around tooth causing swelling and thus pain. you should visit your dentist soon otherwise infection might spread to permanent tooth below the baby tooth. That will cause problem at later stage.
hi
no need to worry about the extraction procedure being painful. its totally painful after the administartion of local anesthesia. and its important to get infected teeth extracted at the earliest to prevent spread of infection to the adjacent teeth or in your son's case to the permanent teeth. swelling you are seeing is because of the abscess. give amoxycillin250mg three times a day along with paracetamol and nimesulide to him. it will help in pain.
Wishing him speedy recovery
with best regards

hello and welcome to HCM,
Definitely you should call the dentist and one more thing you can do is give one analgesic to relieve the pain and anti inflammatory to reduce the swelling. also, u can give one ice pack to reduce the swelling.
thanks
