Twisting And Fractured Fifth Metatarsal Bone, Swelling And Redness In Foot, Painful Throbbing, Black Toes. History Of Dislocated Ankle. Reason?

Several years ago, I dislocated right ankle and broke bone above outside ankle bone. Had surgery with metal plate. One week ago, I twisted this ankle and broke or fractured fifth metatarsal. Dr. put me in bunion boot. Now, I am having acute swelling and redness in foot whenever it is not elevated, with extreme painful throbbing. Toes turn somewhat black. Why is this?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All the symptoms given in the description are suggestive of a TIGHT SPLINT or BOOT.

Loosen it a bit and every symptom of yours will resolve.

Keep your foot end in elevation most of the times & do active movements of the toes to prevent the swelling in toes.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
