Twitching In Sleep, Grinding Teeth. Are They Symptoms Of Epilepsy?

Hi, my 3 yr daughter started twitching in her sleep about a month back. It continues for about 15 minutes after she sleeps, and for an hour before she wakes up. Also once or twice in between. It looks like epilepsy but when she is awake, there are no symptoms. Around the same time she also started grinding her teeth, the intensity of which varies from night to night. Can you please let me know what I should do? Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Epilepsy does not last for more than 5 minutes. However, grinding of teeth, particularly during sleep, by children is a firm indication of worms in the intestine, unless proved otherwise.

I therefore strongly recommend that you a pediatric dose of deworming suspension (Albendazole suspension) once a day for 3 days and thereafter at least ONCE A MONTH.

The diagnosis of worms will be confirmed and, epilepsy excluded, if the child stops grinding of teeth within a week. Otherwise, you may consult her pediatrician.
