Unbearable Pain After Tooth Extraction. Pain In The Jaw, Neck And Ear. Need To See A Doctor?

After extraction of the teeth , it is strictly instructed to the pateint to avoid smoking , alcohol and consumption of hot and spicy food stuffs for 3 to 5 days till the primary healing is completed.

Heat application by hot foods stuffs , smoke or even hot water over the open oral wound delays the healing process and leads to pain post extraction.

There are great chances of DRY socket if the normal healing of the wound is delayed .
blood clot from the extraction socket is dislodged and the socket bone is exposed to the oral environment leading to dry socket condition.

i would suggest you to follow post extraction instructions given by your dentist promptly.

Start with a course of antibiotic and analgesic for 5 to 7 days to prevent infection and relieve the symptoms of pain.

please dont panic at all.

first dont take overdose of analgesics.

second have ice cream plain/ take ice cold water ,put in mouth, place towards extraction site and swallow. do this after every thirty minutes DO NOT SPIT AT ALL.

third get some analgesic injection I/M

Extraction of tooth is often associated with post extraction effects like pain , swelling , numbness , difficulty in mouth opening , fever, malaise , nausea .
You dont have to worry about the symptoms .

A complete extraction wound healing takes three months .
But pain go off completely in 3-5 days .
There could be a chance of some broken root piece left in the socket or a dry socket to rule out this visit a dentist get clinical checkup of the socket , take an x-ray of the tooth.

Take complete course of antibiotic and analgesic .
Follow the post extraction instructions properly.

Take complete rest .
Start taking tab amoxiclav 625 twice tab zerodol twice for 5 days.

Use lukewarm saline gargles 3-4 times a day, use chlorhexidine mouthwash gargles twice , eat soft diet , avoid eating hot and spicy food.

if you are having pain to this extent then consult your dentist asap and switch to inj. Voveran 3ml every 12 hrs or inj. contramal every 12 hrs till pain subsides . oral pain killers wont help .
start luke warm saline rinse with betadine 5-6 times/day for 5 days and hot saline compression over the face on that area 5-6 times/day for 5 days.




Reason for this may be :



1. Left out root piece.

2. damage to the adj. tooth.

3. traumatic extraction leading to damage nerve/bone.



an x ray is required and based on it further treatment will be planned.



after x ray if there is no root piece then a sedative dressing may be placed ( Znoe or alvogyl )

Relax and please follow this, if possible.

Just have ice cream or ice cold water slowly placing it on extraction socket.

Do this repeatedly.

Do not spit or gargle.

If possible take analgesic intramuscular injection for immediate relief.
Do not take more analgesics.

The pain experiencing post extraction may be due to-

Severe infection at the extraction site.

Traumatic injury.

The pain can be relieved by frequent warm saline rinse,
betadine gargle.

Avoid stress,anxiety.
Take rest as much as possible.

Maintain good oral hygiene.

Apply ice-packs.

Avoid food lodgement at the extraction socket area.

There could be NERVE INJURY - now being manifest, as the local analgesic effect is wearing off
