Your Granny must have got Viral Endocarditis which is common. It needs symptomatic treatment and only bed rest. The patient is recovered in two weeks usually. Though there are some complications but hardly seen. Endocarditis is an infection that occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and attach to the inner layer of the heart around the valves. This bacteria can enter the bloodstream during dental procedures, diagnostic procedures, minor or major surgery, or IV drug abuse. Anyone with a defective heart valve or who has had a defective valve replaced with an artificial one is at high risk for developing endocarditis. One need to be admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics. Antibiotics help body fight off the bacteria that is causing the endocarditis. If heart valves are severely affected, surgery may become necessary.
