Watery Stool And Fussy Child. Why Would That Happen?

My 2 year old daughter has been very fussy the last 2 days and her stool has been watery and light tan color. Thought she was constipated because when she was trying to poop she would get red and sweaty. But her stool that would come out was watery and light in color. She cries for a long time afterwards. No fever . what could it be?

Two-year olds can experience bouts of viral diarrhoea, no matter which country they reside in. However, this type of illness is very common in the tropics during the monsoon. Pain on defecation can be a symptom of a diarrhoeal illness as well, in particular that which is caused by certain kinds of bacteria and also a dysentery caused by amoeba organisms.

The first thing to do is to give her liberal quantities of water in which salt and sugar have been added in the quantities recommended for prevention of dehydration. Keep the bottom area dry so that fungus infection does not occur. If the symptoms fail to resolve in 2-3 days, or if she develops fresh problems like vomiting, high fever, blood or sticky mucus in the stool, you should take her to the doctor immediately as she might then need antibiotics.

You may give her oral zinc in the meantime. The quantity of zinc will be about 10 mg/day in less than a year old babies, and 20 mg/day in older babies.

Hope this helps.
