What Activities Are Appropriate For Stroke Clients?

What type of activities are appropriate for stroke clients/residents, in a skilled nursing facility.( Right sided and Left sided stroke ) I m not talking about P.T., O.T., or S.T.. I am an activity assistant working at a skilled nursing facility. This is a discussion question for students at American River College Gerontology Department, in Sacramento, CA. Thank you. Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

In general, there are no restrictions when it comes to physical activity, in a patient with recent stroke. However, the activities would depend on the type of deficit, as well as the potential to improve any affected function.

For example, in a patient with left sided brain stroke, there would be language dysfunction and right sided weakness. So, this patient should be encouraged to use the right hand as much as possible, and should also try reading, speaking, etc.

Another patient with right sided stroke may have weakness of left sided limbs. He should be encouraged to do exercises for the left arms nd leg.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
