What Are Symptoms Of Endometriosis?

I believe I have endometriosis. I've had terrible menstrual cramps with my cycle, since a year or two after it started. I was 13 at the time. Other symptoms include: stomach cramps, nausea, vomitting, cold sweats, tremmors, extreme sensitivity to temperature. I am on Depo Provera, now, as a method of treatment. My cycle has stopped, entirely. No more symptoms! Still worried. Is there a way to check for endometriosis, without exploratory surgery? I've heard that is the only way to find out.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
See basically endometriosis is a disease of symptoms.
The symptoms themselves are so clear and well defined, that they suffice to establish a diagnosis .
Other than that, sometimes there are tyical findings on a pelvic ultrasound scan, and better still, an MRI.
However, the gold standard to know if endometriosis is present, is a diagnostic laparoscopy.
If you are pain free and period free on the Depo, you are right now in remission.
However, endometriosis is characterized by recurrence and flare ups.
Once you are off the drug, it will most likely come back.
If fertility is not an issue, hysterectomy is a good option, unless you are nearing menopause.
Else drugs like progesterone, Danazol and GnRH analogues will help keep your disease in check, but there would be some side effects.
Conception or pregnancy is protective against endometriosis.
All the best.
Take care.
