What Are The Chances For Food Entering Into The Lungs Of An Infant?

My baby was choking on a mint this afternoon. I immediately try to remove it by sticking my finger in his mouth and gagging him to make him throw up. I could feel it in his throat and tried to pull it out but instead pushed it down further. He then was able to breath freely again and has been breathing fine since, but I can t help but wander if it went into his stomach or his lungs. How would I know? I don t think it will show up in his poop later since it would have dissolved by then. Would he continue to cough if it were in his lungs?

Hello,
I had gone through your question and understand your question.

Short answer: No, it has not entered his lungs.

Detailed answer:
Thank you for your question on HCM.

Children tend to put whatever they come across into their mouth. But worry not. Our body is equipped with many defence mechanisms which will prevent things to enter into lungs. Cough is one such defence mechanism. Even a small dust particle can cause cough. So, if your child is breathing normally, not coughing then there is nothing to worry. But be careful. Always keep an eye to prevents such things happening in future.

You can contact at any time if you have any further questions.
Take care.
