Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Chances Of Developing Reye S Syndrome With High Dosage Of Aspirin?
My husband gave Disprin Forte (500mg Aspirin + 9.5mg Codeine Phosphate) to our 10 year old son last night, who weighs 46kg. He didn t read the warnings about not giving children Aspirin. My son had a very sore throat that started yesterday at school and a headache and fever. I am wondering what are the chances of my son developing Reye s Syndrome with this one high dosage of Aspirin. Is there a way to test for the disease before it gets serious? What are the symptoms? What would you recommend I do, wait or be more proactive?
As per my clinical experience, as the weight of the child is 46 kg, dose of aspirin is around moderate to higher consumption site. It is need of liver function tests with SGPT and alkaline phosphatase which will help to monitor possible Reye syndrome over a period of time.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
