What Are The Consequences Of Severe Physical Exertion On Broken Tibia? What Are The Precautions Worth Taking?

Hello My boyfriend broke his right leg ( between knee and ankle) TIBIA on 7-25-13. An orthopaedic in GA said it was a "clean break" and just needed a cast. He then wrapped from toe to thigh in plaster of Paris and said to see an ortho in 2 wks where you live (Columbia SC) to get the cast off!! Well.... 9-3-13 cast came off at the demand of the patient. Patient was told it was still broken so was given a BOOT. Another Ortho here is Columbia SC said what have you done??? Wondering why the Georgia Ortho didnt perform surgery. Here it is MID DECEMBER, the patient just began walking without a crutch and limps badly and has a huge knot where the break was.
He owns his own business by the way in construction and has to climb ladders which he was on today!!! I prohibited him to climb any further ladders however he said he has to make a living. I am not working and he feels he has to do this to get bills paid. He is 40 years old 5'11" and weighs around 210 lbs. He comes in exhausted and limping and in need of meds when he works. Please help with any advice you can give as to what needs to happen. ALSO he has very bad insurance and will not go unless he breaks the other leg............... HELP??? Thanks LISA

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Severe physical exertion on a broken tibia can cause a delay in the healing or malunion or non union of the fractured fragments. Proper immobilization is necessary for adequate and early healing.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
